Over 900 Common Chemicals Linked to Increased Breast Cancer Risk

Over 900 synthetic chemicals were recently identified as possessing the potential to increase breast cancer risk, according to a new study. Those identified included many chemicals present in everyday consumer products as well as more than 30 pesticides currently in use.

Breast cancer recently became the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in women globally and the second-leading cause of cancer death for women in the U.S. Rates have notably been increasing in younger women, a trend that cannot be explained by genetic factors.

In the study, researchers searched multiple international and U.S. government databases for chemicals that cause mammary tumors in animals – a trait thought to increase human breast cancer risk. They also searched for hormone-disrupting chemicals that stimulate estradiol or progesterone synthesis or activate the estrogen receptor present in breast cells.

Some of the chemicals identified included certain phthalates, DDT, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA – a type of PFAS), and multiple pesticides (malathion, parathion, atrazine, and more), several of which have been approved for use in spite of studies showing that they may stimulate mammary tumors.

Salmon May Help Lower LDL Cholesterol Levels, Heart Disease Risk

Unique compounds found in salmon may help lower both total and LDL “bad” cholesterol levels, some recent research has discovered. Eating salmon regularly could also improve other measures of cardiometabolic health, potentially lowering the risk for heart disease.

The study included 41 adult participants who were all overweight or obese but did not have any metabolic disorders at baseline. Each participant consumed 2 servings of salmon per week as part of a Mediterranean diet for two 5-week periods separated by a break period of 4 weeks.

Blood samples were taken and specific indicators of cardiometabolic health recorded before and after the study for each individual. Researchers were also able to identify compounds specific to salmon to analyze its effects separately from the rest of the foods included in the diet.

Salmon and its compounds were associated with improvements in triglycerides and apolipoprotein B – two factors involved in cardiometabolic health – as well as lower cholesterol levels. However, the study was limited by its small size and needs confirmation from larger, more focused trials.

Vitamin D Your Body Can Actually Use

Statistics show that up to 41.6% of the American adult population is deficient in vitamin D – and that number jumps to 61% for older adults.

This is highly concerning because studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to serious health issues, including an increased risk of osteoporosis, falls, and bone fractures. For many, there's simply no easy way to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D, especially during the winter months when sunlight – the  #1 source – is minimal. Even so-called fortified foods often contain only small quantities of vitamin D in an inferior, hard-to-absorb form.

Fortunately, a quality supplement can make up the difference, but many on the market contain poorly absorbed vitamin D (made from lanolin, aka "wool grease”) that is essentially a waste of money. Purality Health’s Liposomal Vitamin D3 with K2 is a game changer with a liquid formula that is plant-derived, ultra-pure, and designed to be fully absorbed by your body utilizing micelle liposomal technology. It's also third-party tested for quality assurance, delicious, and easy to take daily.

12 Common Causes of Foot/Ankle Swelling + Top At-Home Care Tips

Swelling in your feet and ankles is not uncommon if you've been on your feet all day, but it can also indicate more serious conditions like deep vein thrombosis, heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease. Swelling can also occur as a side effect of certain medications or due to an infection like cellulitis. You can decrease foot/ankle swelling by putting your feet up, exercising your legs, and avoiding tight clothing. However, severe or persistent swelling and swelling that occurs only in one leg are signs to get medical attention. (More)

Castor Oil May Help Treat Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease affects millions of people in the U.S. alone and involves symptoms like dryness, burning or stinging, sensitivity to light, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. Though normally treated with artificial tears or prescription eye drops, a recent study has found that applying castor oil to the eyelids could help treat dry eye disease naturally. The oil, which comes from the Ricinus communis plant, decreased overall symptoms of dry eyes and reduced eyelid redness. (More)

Smoking Causes Long-Term Disruptions to the Immune System

Smoking is known to negatively affect overall health, especially lung health, but many people are not aware that it also disrupts the immune system. According to recent research, smoking heightens inflammatory immune response and impairs cells involved in immune memory – both of which are harmful to overall immune function. Unfortunately, some of these effects can last for 10 to 15 years after smoking cessation, although other aspects of immunity recover more quickly. (More)

Resistance Training Can Help Ease Depression, Anxiety Symptoms

An ever-increasing amount of evidence points to exercise as a potential alternative or supplemental therapy for reducing both depression and anxiety symptoms. While much research has focused on the effects of aerobic exercise (walking, cycling, swimming, etc.), a new study indicates that resistance training – also called strength training – may have similar benefits. The ideal “dose” of resistance exercise has yet to be determined. (More)

8 Surprising Benefits of Popcorn, Including Incredible Antioxidant Content!

Popcorn is one of the most popular snack foods and can be surprisingly healthy – if you eat it the right way. A whole grain food, popcorn is loaded with fiber and packed full of antioxidants known as polyphenols that could help fend off chronic diseases. It also contains a few B vitamins, some essential minerals, and a compound known as ferulic acid that may have protective properties against cancer. Just don't eat it loaded with butter and salt, and skip the microwave variety. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for about 30% of total protein. It acts as the primary building block for your skin, muscles, bones, tendons, and more. Collagen production declines with age, leading to “symptoms” like wrinkles, stiffer tendons, and joint pain.

Are You in the 50% with Vitamin D Insufficiency?

An estimated 50% of the global population is vitamin D insufficient with 35-42% of U.S. adults having an outright deficiency (and 61% of older adults).

This is bad news because being deficient in vitamin D is linked to serious health issues, including an increased risk of osteoporosis, falls, and bone fractures – and can send you into a “blue” mood. It's tough for most people to get enough vitamin D from food and sunlight alone (especially during the winter months), which is why a high-quality supplement can make all the difference. Purality Health’s Liposomal Vitamin D3 + K2 has a tasty liquid formula that allows for full absorption of this critical nutrient. It's third-party tested for quality, easy to take, and plant-derived – with vitamin K to support healthy bones.
